Forged in Adversity.

Rooted in San Antonio.

Born on Camp Lester Naval Base in Okinawa, Japan, Enrique Munguia's diverse heritage includes a Filipino-American mother from Pearl City, Hawaii, and a Mexican-American father from Tucson, Arizona. His family has strong military ties, with both his father and paternal grandfather having served as Marines, his maternal grandfather served in the Navy, and his maternal step-grandfather served in the Air Force.

Before his first birthday, Enrique and his parents moved to San Antonio, Texas—the city that would shape his story and become his true home.

Raised by a Resilient Single Mom

Growing up, Enrique shared a close bond with both of his parents. His father immersed him in pursuits like working out, hunting, fishing, and also introduced him to the world of real estate. With his mother, he learned the importance of education. She played an integral role in his athletic career by shuttling him around to multiple practices a week while working full-time. He grew up as an only child.

At ten, his parents divorced, leading to six years of no communication with his father. Raised by a single mother, Enrique experienced the constant strain of financial instability. Utility shutoffs and his mother’s frequent job changes were common, making stability a rare commodity.

Despite these challenges, they found strength in their community. His maternal family, who resided in Hawaii, California, and Texas, provided crucial support, ensuring they never faced hardship alone. Enrique and his mother also found community in their church. His mother was remarried to an Army veteran shortly after his senior year of high school.

Enrique had a unique upbringing in that he went to a great high school and grew up in a wealthy area within the city of San Antonio. However, his home life (frequent utility shutoffs and financial instability) was unlike most of where he grew up. He often found himself chasing accolades and competing with his peers in order to find validation within himself. As he got older, Enrique realized it was unhealthy to feel the need to prove himself and show that he belonged.

After six years without communication, Enrique began to build a strong relationship with his father during his sophomore year of high school. However, their relationship ended again after Enrique graduated high school.

Throughout college, Enrique and his father remained estranged. Shortly after graduating college, they reconnected and reestablished their bond. Enrique's relationship with his father is incredibly meaningful to him, and he believes it is crucial for children to grow up with healthy relationships with both parents. He understands the value of having both parents in his life and wants to help young people who are products of divorce have healthy relationships with each of their parents.

Rebuilding Bridges

Enrique is dedicated to giving back to the San Antonio community that shaped him. He is passionate about mentoring the next generation, with a focus on:

  • Student-Athletes: Drawing on his own experiences, he aims to show student-athletes how to apply the discipline and dedication from their sport to every aspect of their lives, from academics to future careers.

  • Underprivileged Youth: He believes that every child deserves a chance to succeed, regardless of their circumstances. He is committed to providing guidance and support to help these young people unlock their full potential.

  • Children of Divorced Parents: Having navigated this himself, Enrique is dedicated to mentoring children from divorced families, helping them maintain healthy and supportive relationships with both parents.
